Should I join every social networking site?
At what point do we reach social networking overload?
Is it better to have a basic profile on all of the social networking sites?
… or would it be more productive to focus on becoming an active participant in just two or three?
If you had to choose just 2 to participate in, which ones are “best” (and why)?
Just wondering out loud.
Advice and/or opinions greatly appreciated.
Todd

If you’re selling yourself and have time to maintain them all, why not. Free exposure. If you’re not and you hardly log in to them, you don’t interact with your friends and it’s just to be on some site, then no. Don’t bother. I’m on sites I actually log into several times a week and I’m not selling anything, but who has time to maintain all this stuff.

I’m an active participant on five or so social networking sites and have found that that works MUCH better than being on a ton of them and not being active at all.
Like Valerie pointed out, the important thing is to use them to interact with people. I suggest joining a few…as many as you can keep up with decently. Social networking sites only work if you’re being social on them. It’s no different than any other form of marketing really. The more someone knows you and trusts you the more they’ll be willing to get involved in what you have to offer.
As for my favorite one, it’s Yuwie by far. The control panel is much more user-friendly and it’s a much friendlier and social atmosphere than MySpace is, minus most of the nonsense. Plus is pays me money for doing the exact same thing I used to do for free! Facebook is OK, but it’s still largely made up of students. If you’re trying to market a home business opportunity or something of the like to the Facebook demographic, you won’t find much success. Bottom line, if I was stuck on a desert island and had only one I could choose to keep in contact with the rest of the world, it’d be Yuwie.
Wow, that was a really long comment. Can we say too much coffee!
Shine on,
Aaron

I love Stumbleupon. Generates a ton of traffic but more importantly I have met such interesting, wonderful people and discovered some of the best sites I’ve ever seen. It can be hard to learn your way around at first but the help group is great. Check it out!

@Natural - yes, this is kind of what I’m thinking. I have accounts on quite a few sites. But there are some such as Facebook, that I know I should be on, but really haven’t found the time to set up my profile and interact with my friends. I’m trying to decide whether it’s worth doing, or if I’m already over extended.
@Aaron - thanks for the advice … I appreciate you sharing your experience. I think this is the direction I’m going to go. Focus mainly on Ryze (because I run a somewhat active forum), MySpace (because I have a few good friends there), and Zubby (because I was one of the first 1000 members). I’d also like to learn a little more about interacting with friends on Stumbleupon (since it’s given me several nice traffic spikes over the past few months).
@Gizmo - thanks for the advice on Stumbleupon … I’ll check out that help group.

Todd,
I try to focus on a couple. I really like bloggingzoom, mixx and stumbleupon.
StumbleUpon is my favorite by far. Any blogger should be using it to drive traffic to their site.
More importantly, you can find some awesome sites that you otherwise would not find.
