photo by Richard MasonerI was cruising down the H-2 Highway earlier today when I noticed a car had been pulled over by one of Honolulu’s finest. The driver did not look pleased. I of course, was quite happy that it wasn’t me …

since according to my speedometer I was going 62mph at that time.

It got me thinking …

Why is it that there are certain rules/laws that many of us choose to ignore?

… and more importantly, are there karmic consequences when we willingly choose to bend the rules?

I doubt there are many of us who can honestly say that we Never speed. But that’s just one example. There are many other areas in life, (and especially so for those of us who do online marketing) where we are presented with “opportunities” to cheat the system … or at the very least push ethical envelope.

Which presents another question …

Do the ends always justify the means?

Or, is it better to do the “right thing”, even if it sometimes means not finishing in 1st place?

For those of us with websites or blogs, the most obvious area where we are presented with the temptation to “speed”, is in trying to build link popularity … and thus bring traffic to our sites.

Admittedly, with such a new blog, I’ve been able to watch the google page rank controversy pretty much from the sidelines. I have no dog in this hunt. (yet)

But, I do kind of wonder …

If you choose to participate in link farms, do paid reviews, or sell text link ads, isn’t complaining about google somewhat analogous to getting mad at the police officer who pulls you over for going 63 in a 55mph zone?

Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that I’m doing some things on this blog that are just as likely to get me “slapped” at some point in the future. I’m just not all that sure that getting mad a google will actually do anything to improve the situation … unless of course you’re making enough money that you can just say google doesn’t matter.

Just a few random thoughts for a Thursday evening. Now I’m off to watch ER ;-)
Till next time …
Todd
